Barthell Coal Camp, Whitley City Kentucky

The Barthell Coal Camp was owned by the Stearns Coal & Lumber Company.
These buildings housed the barber, doctor, bath house and company store.

This is the entrance to the mine.

This map shows how big this mine was. The circles are 60x30 foot pillars the miners leave to support the ceiling. The mine was over 300ft deep and 12 miles of tunnels. You can see in this map that they dug under the Paunch Creek.

  1. We are planning to visit this mine on our summer road trip. Was it worth the price of admission for both guided tours? Our kids are 8 and 14.

  2. Yes, it was worth it. We got lucky and got the second tour for fee. The owners are very nice! Don't forget to stop at Big South Fork National rec area. The Kentucky side has a nice campground too.

  3. IT may have been worth it back in 2010, but in 2013 the people running the place are rude, acted like they didn't want you and the price is $30/person now. There was no one there when we arrived and were told we'd have to wait 2 hrs for the next tour since we just missed one and they were every 2 hours. There's nothing to see outside of their tours. It's hard to find and not worth it now.
